Ex-Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer: “It’s weird to be a Dolphin…””I can’t wait to visit Orchard Park this year.”
In a recent podcast, Jordan Poyer discusses his love for Buffalo and how Bills Mafia helped him grow as a person.
Jordan Poyer is no longer with the Buffalo Bills, but he still admits to and respects Buffalo and the Bills Mafia.
Poyer recently appeared as a guest on the ‘Centered on Buffalo’ podcast, which was hosted by former Bill and current Bills radio color analyst Eric Wood.
“There is no hostility toward the organization or the people of Buffalo. Love will always exist. I have enjoyed my time in Buffalo.”
“It seems unreal—am I actually in a dolphin facility right now?” I’ve been a part of the Buffalo Bills’ Red White and Blue Mafia for the past seven years.”
In a series of salary cap reductions this offseason, Buffalo released the seasoned safety following seven productive years as a leader and safety with the Bills. Poyer subsequently inked a one-year, $2 million contract with the Miami Dolphins.
Poyer’s release gives the Bills much-needed cap room in the amount of $5.7 million.
Over the Cap claims that Miami offered Poyer a base salary of $1.25 million, which included a $500,000 signing bonus, $250,000 in per-game roster bonuses, and a $500,000 guaranteed. The Dolphins 2024 cap will be reduced by $1.99 million as a result of his agreement.
Poyer and Micah Hyde were one of the league’s top safety duos when Poyer was a Buffalo Bill. Poyer told Eric Wood that he is still driven to compete after being most recently named an All-Pro for the 2022 campaign. Poyer, who turns 33 this season, has played in only 12 games in 2022 and has displayed signs of wear and tear over the last two years. Nevertheless, he managed to play 16 games in 2023. During his time in Buffalo, he also demonstrated remarkable durability, starting all 16 regular season games from 2018 to 2021 in addition to 15 games in 2017.
Poyer: “Being a dolphin is surreal.”
After seven years as the head of the Bills organization, Poyer said it has taken some getting used to representing the teal and orange: “Yesterday, while foam rolling, I was gazing around and thought, ‘Is this really a dolphin facility right now?’ It just seemed so bizarre. I’ve been a part of the Buffalo Bills’ Red White and Blue Mafia for the past seven years.”
Thank You To The Buffalo People And The Bills Organization
Poyer immediately thought of his good relationships with the Bills organization and fans when Wood asked him about his favorite memory from his time in Buffalo: “I can sit here all day [to] talk about my appreciation for the people of that organization, my teammates, [the] people in that city.” I’ve been able to develop as a participant. When I arrived, nobody there truly knew who I was. In Buffalo, I was able to truly launch my football career.”
“I am aware of the genuine individuals within Bills Mafia and the community. They have my undying love. I adore them so much. It’s only sports, so don’t take it too seriously. It’s not a good bye-bye, see you later. Neither the organization nor the people of Buffalo are the target of any hostility. You know that the affection will always be there. I’ve had a good experience being in Buffalo.”
Regarding Bills Mafia: “Nobody, nobody [can] surpass the feats that Bills Mafia has accomplished—jumping off tables, setting fires, bowling balls, and other crazy things! Thus, keep going… maintain the fandom… This year, I’m definitely looking forward to visiting Orchard Park.”
The Assistance He Got to Kick His Alcohol Addiction
“For me, what matters more is that they enabled me to develop personally away from the field. When I first joined the team in 2017, most of Buffalo saw me at my lowest point. I had no idea who I was as a person, was going through a lot at the time, and didn’t realize how much I was going through. But I was going through a lot—alcoholism, relationships, and just a ton of stuff off the field that I didn’t know how to handle. Hence, being able to develop off the pitch. In 2020, I became sober, and many people embraced me wholeheartedly. Many individuals in that community joined together to support me after I came clean and opened up about my alcoholism. This helped me to keep growing and realized that life is not over and that you can still achieve your goals.”
On Becoming a Leader & Joining the Rival Dolphins: Pather discussed how he plans to interact with teammates and adjust to a new squad, saying, “It’s going to be interesting, but I’m excited. It’s just about maturing and continuing to evolve as a player and as a person.” There will be new relationships, teammates, and faces that I get to meet and get to know. I’ll learn about their families, as well as who they are as individuals and athletes. At the end of the day, everyone wants to win a championship, and in order to do that, you have to bond and work as a team. I’m looking forward to developing those partnerships.”
“Fitnessball is a sport where partnerships are formed and maintained for a lifetime.”
“After seven years in the division, you are cut by Buffalo and join the rival team in Miami. This football squad here in Florida is quite good. I might be one of the components that gets him over the obstacle. What a great chance to visit this place. Miami might completely collapse if you come here and win a playoff game—this squad hasn’t won a postseason game in 20 years.”
I’m going to attempt to come and offer some of the things that I’ve been able to learn over the years and help, since the [Bills] have done it in Buffalo for six of the last seven years. Acquire knowledge from them as well. I’m come here to just keep learning, growing, and evolving with an open heart and mind.”

Fans of the Bills will recall Poyer as the player and leader the team needed to help turn things around beginning in 2017, as stated by Eric Wood. Throughout his seven years with the Bills, he oversaw the defense, helped the team make it to the playoffs six times, and won the AFC East four times in a row. It’s good to see that Poyer and the Bills fanbase definitely have a mutual affection and respect.
