According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the New Orleans Saints will sign wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr., a former member of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Birmingham Stallions.
Austin is expected to report to the Saints’ training camp later this week after agreeing to a one-year contract.Austin, 24, spent three seasons as a collegiate athlete at Notre Dame until 2021. He caught 54 passes for 996 yards and seven touchdowns throughout that time.
In 2021, he had his greatest season with 48 receptions for 888 yards and seven touchdowns. After being chosen out of the draft, Austin signed as an undrafted rookie with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022. Despite being one of Jacksonville’s last roster cuts, he was added back to the practice squad.
After that season, he signed a reserves/futures deal with the Jaguars, but he was released before the 2023–24 season began once more. January 20, 2022: Kevin Austin Jr., a wide receiver for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, scores a touchdown against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
This past spring, Austin became a fixture with the United Football League’s Birmingham Stallions.
This previous season, Birmingham finished 9-1 and defeated the San Antonio Brahmas to win the inaugural UFL Championship. Throughout the UFL season, Austin had 15 receptions for 253 yards and two scores.
The 6’2″ and 200-pound Kevin Austin Jr. will try to improve upon a New Orleans squad that placed 14th in overall offence and 11th in passing efficiency the previous campaign. In the offseason, the Saints appointed Klint Kubiak as their offensive coordinator, replacing long-time coach Pete Carmichael.
A.T. Perry, Rashid Shaheed, and Chris Olave, three returning receivers, will battle with Austin at wideout. The Saints also signed rookie fifth-round pick Bub Means, undrafted rookies Mason Tipton and Jermaine Jackson, and free agents Cedrick Wilson, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Stanley Morgan Jr. this summer.
