Dolphins hire Seahawks assistant coach DeShawn Shead.

Former player and assistant coach DeShawn Shead is leaving the Seattle Seahawks to take a job with the Miami Dolphins.

The Seattle Seahawks are losing a cherished part of the team, which is an unpleasant truth of the NFL sometimes.

DeShawn Shead is joining the Miami Dolphins in an unspecified capacity. Shead played for the Seattle Seahawks for five of his six seasons in the NFL before joining Pete Carroll’s staff as a defensive assistant in 2021. The former cornerback thanked the Seahawks for many wonderful years before announcing his retirement on Instagram.

“My trip here in Seattle was incredible!” Written by Shead. “I met my wife, Mrs. Jshead, had three incredible children, began my NFL career, won a Super Bowl, made friends for life, and began my coaching career! For an incredible 12 years, I would like to thank @petecarroll, all of my former teammates and players, everyone I’ve interacted with in Seattle, the @12s, and the whole @seahawks organization!

“Having said that, I’m thrilled and eager to lead the Miami Dolphins again the following season!”

Shead, a lesser-known member of the Legion of Boom, signed a free agent contract with the Seahawks in 2012. He took some time to establish himself in the starting lineup, but once Byron Maxwell left in 2015, he began to see more playing time. Shead played in 54 games, starting 22, and finished with 153 total tackles, 24 passes defended, and two interceptions during his five seasons with Seattle.

Shead played sparingly for the Detroit Lions during his final NFL season. In 2019, he also trained with the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks, though he didn’t suit up for either club.
