NFL Rumors: Talks about a contract extension have Justin Jefferson missing the Vikings’ OTAs.
Star wide receiver Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings has been in talks with the organization about a new contract extension, but he decided to express his dissatisfaction with the conversations when they failed to yield any results.
When organized team activities began on Monday at the team’s training facility, Jefferson was nowhere to be seen, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
OTAs are planned for the Vikings for the next six days of this month. Although these exercises are optional, Jefferson risks a fine if he misses Minnesota’s required minicamp, which is scheduled for June 4-6.
Jefferson is entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2024 and he will be making $19.7 million on the fifth-year option on his contract. The three-time Pro Bowler is one of the best receivers in the NFL, so it’s somewhat surprising that the Vikings have yet to lock him up with a long-term deal.
Despite the lack of progress in contract discussions, Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell expressed confidence that a deal would eventually get done.
“I know everything’s going to get worked out there,” O’Connell told Kay Adams on Up & Adams last week. “Justin knows the love and admiration that I have for him, and he knows he’s such a big part of what we do around here.”
The fact that there are other elite receivers who might earn huge salaries this offseason besides Jefferson is probably the biggest obstacle. Both the Dallas Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb and the Cincinnati Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase are anticipated to receive contract extensions from their respective organizations, so it’s possible that they’re all waiting to see who sets the market so they can outbid each other.
However, the Vikings run the danger of making their finest player hostile. Following the departure of quarterback Kirk Cousins and the selection of rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who was selected with the 10th overall choice in this month’s draft, Minnesota is going to have a transitional year. If the team wants to keep winning, it will be crucial to give Jefferson some stability.
