Carlos Alcaraz says he “felt the pressure” after losing the Olympic final.
After losing to Novak Djokovic in the Olympic final, Carlos Alcaraz thought back on the match and shared how his emotions were different from those he had in prior Grand Slam finals.
Alcaraz advanced to the Olympic singles final for the first time without dropping a set, although he lost to top seed Djokovic in straight sets.
It’s a little bit different,” the four-time major winner said after the match when asked why the Olympic final felt different. It’s not the same; I mean, I was competing for Spain and the gold medal.
I have been in four Grand Slam finals, and throughout the challenging times, I raised my game and performed exceptionally well. And I think I felt the pressure more today. Perhaps other players are not performing in the same manner or are under pressure to represent their nation and flag when they play.
I think I experienced pressure to perform at my best in those circumstances, which made the difference between competing in Olympic finals and Grand Slams noticeable to me.
I play four Grand Slams every year and the Olympic Games is one every four years, so perhaps you might feel the pressure playing,” the 21-year-old continued. Like I mentioned, I could sense it.
I’m really proud and I’m leaving the court, I’m leaving the tournament with my head really, really high knowing that I gave everything on the court, I gave everything that I could on court today and I will [be] back stronger and I hope to learn from this situation,” said Alcaraz, who was initially overcome with emotion after his final defeat.
However, he now seems to be looking back on his silver medal with a different perspective.
Even though losing in the Olympic final may be disappointing, Carlos Alcaraz was still quite good and was only defeated by Novak Djokovic’s outstanding tennis. Although Alcaraz’s anger following the match was evident, it’s encouraging to see that the 21-year-old is now viewing the situation more positively and is appreciating his silver medal.
At the age of 37, Djokovic earned his first gold medal, and Alcaraz could have more chances to improve on his silver in Paris.
