DeAndre Jordan, a free agency center, intends to sign a one-year, $3.6 million contract to stay with the Nugget
In 2022, right before the team’s championship run, Jordan, 35, signed a free agent contract with the Nuggets and will be sticking around for a third season. Although his on-court impact has decreased since his heyday, he is still a formidable force in the locker room and a capable lob threat when necessary.
Jordan played in 36 games this season, starting two of them, and finished with an average of 3.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 11 minutes every night. His shooting percentage, which is still rather high at 62.4%, is limited to his shooting around the basket.
Jordan’s best years were spent in Los Angeles, where he was selected by the Clippers in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft, made one All-Star appearance, and established himself as a vital member of the “Lob City” teams.
Before moving to Denver, he had brief stints with the Mavericks, Knicks, Nets, Lakers, and Sixers.
It will be fascinating to see if Jordan’s new contract is indeed worth $3.6 million or if it will only be a minimum deal. The veteran’s minimum wage for a player with 10 or more years of service is predicted to be worth a little over $3.3 million.
Every dollar counts in Denver because of the luxury tax line and the aprons, and a minimum salary would only count as $2.1MM for tax and salary ceiling considerations.
The deal with Jordan before Sunday night’s start of free agency provides an answer to one question regarding the Nuggets. The team’s first goal is to re-sign shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who on Thursday turned down his player option. Justin Holiday and Vlatko Cancar are also unrestricted free agents.
