NHL Rumours: Defender for the Toronto Maple Leafs Could Still Be Dealt…..

Toronto Maple Leafs defender could yet be traded, according to NHL rumours

This Friday, it’s time for some more NHL rumours. The first haze of autonomy has lifted. There are still a lot of rumours to talk about, though. Trades can be completed this summer, but there are still a lot of available free agents. A player is still susceptible to trade even after agreeing to a new contract. In this most recent round of NHL rumours, a Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman who may still be available for trade is discussed.

All NHL speculations are based on reliable sources and could be updated at any time.

Blueliner for the Toronto Maple Leafs Could Be Trade Bait

Analysis: Iljegren did sign a two-year deal lately, with a $3 million cap charge per season. The blueliner could still be traded, though. At first, there were worries that Leafs general manager Brad Treliving would sign a contract before of the opening of free agency. On June 30, nevertheless, Liljegren put his signature on that two-year contract.

Rasmus Sandin, a talented Swedish defenseman, experienced a similar fate with the Leafs after being traded to the Washington Capitals. Sandin was transferred to the nation’s capital after failing to receive continuous minutes. But Sandin seized the chance, turning it into a five-year contract that would have paid him $4.6 million a season.

Chipping Out

In preparation for the next campaign, Toronto is attempting to reduce its enormous payroll. The Leafs are and always will be a cap team, but it’s critical that they find some additional space to breathe. If there is an obvious need, Treliving might want to be able to add a piece at the trade deadline.

After adding Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Chris Tanev to their blueliner, the Maple Leafs did make a few adjustments. Tanev played a crucial role in the Dallas Stars’ lineup as they advanced to the Western Conference Final. After some disappointing years, there was some concern about Ekman-Larsson’s future in North America. He did, however, discover his calling with the Florida Panthers and lead them to a Stanley Cup.

Both additions could mean there may not be room for Liljegren to have a bunch of minutes. He may want to seek an opportunity elsewhere the same way Sandin did.

Not Just One Trade

In previous NHL rumours, we’ve essentially discussed Mitch Marner nonstop. It appears that Leafs supporters are mostly interested in that move. Still, a Liljegren move is not completely out of the question.

At least when it comes to the defence, Toronto is not content to simply run it back. It’s never easy to lose young defenders like Liljegren. But Toronto could have to force its hand once more. Even if the cap hit for Treliving and the Maple Leafs is only $3 million, every little bit counts.
