Tennis Open Champion Djokovic Wins
In his first Wimbledon match of the new year, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic defeated Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, a stunning victory that gave him renewed confidence.
Djokovic had knee surgery early last month, which hindered his preparations for this year’s grass-court major. Despite this, the 37-year-old showed no signs of discomfort as he easily won the opening round at Centre Court in one hour and 58 minutes. To get to 19-0 in first-round encounters at SW19, the Serbian broke his opponent’s serve twice in each set.
“That was excellent. Djokovic said during his on-court interview, “I was really happy with the way I moved on the court today.” The situation was obviously a little bit different heading into Wimbledon this year.
