Reports: Defenseman Jani Hakanpaa Signs Two-Year, $3 Million Contract with Maple Leafs

The right-handed penalty killer from Finland gave the Maple Leafs’ defence additional versatility.

The Toronto Maple Leafs keep bolstering their defensive line. And they’re using size to accomplish it.

The Leafs signed Finnish defenseman Jani Hakanpaa to a $3 million, two-year contract, according to several reports.

Hakanpaa is a 6-foot-5 defenseman that primarily plays on the third defense pair. He’s another right-handed shot, whom the Leafs were targeting. The 32-year-old hasn’t played since March 16 after a knee issue forced an arthroscopic procedure. He did skate with Dallas toward the end of their run to the Western Conference final but did not get back into action.

Hakanpaa has two goals and 10 assists in 64 games. His size will make him a lead candidate to take part in the team’s first penalty-killing unit. He was the third defenseman the Leafs signed on the opening day of free agency.

The Leafs signed Chris Tanev to a six-year, $27 million followed by a four-year deal worth $3.5 million per season.
