In the incident that left Auburn Tigers football player Brian Battie and three other people injured, as well as his brother dead, a guy in Sarasota, Florida, has been taken into custody and charged with murder.
The Sarasota County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office detained Darryl Bernard Brookins on Wednesday as the person they believe to be responsible for the shooting that happened on Saturday morning at around 3:30 a.m.
According to his lawyer, Brookins turned himself in to Sarasota County deputies, as reported by the Sarasota ABC affiliate.
The Auburn player’s brother, Tommie Battie, was declared dead at the scene, and Brian Battie was sent to the hospital, where he was listed as very ill.
Brookins is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm and of murder and attempted murder.
Although Battie’s health has not been officially updated, Hugh Freeze, the coach of Auburn footballfor the athlete, who was allegedly still on a ventilator following a “set back.”
A year ago, Battie was Auburn’s primary kick return specialist in addition to receiving backup running back snaps.
With an average of 23 yards per return, he was fifth in the SEC. When it came to special teams, he scored 49 yards per kick return.
As Auburn’s backup tailback a year ago, Battie gained 227 yards on 51 attempts and scored a touchdown.
Battie played three seasons at USF before moving to Auburn. In 2021, he was selected as a unanimous All-America pick. The following year, after rushing for 1,186 yards and eight touchdowns, he was named to the second team of the AAC.
Before moving to Auburn, Battie rushed for 1,842 yards and 10 touchdowns at USF.
