Rafael Nadal’s incredible run at the Madrid Open is about to come to an end, thanks to Jiri Lehecka. In the round of 16, the 30th seed will take on the five-time champion. Before the match, he made a bold declaration, claiming to be the favourite and stating that it was unwise to be afraid. Lehecka recently defeated Rafael Nadal in a practise match, and the Czech player hopes to reverse that outcome on Tuesday night.
Nadal has advanced to the Madrid Open’s final 16 against all odds. He said he couldn’t serve since he was losing to students at his Mallorcan academy just three weeks prior.
However, in only his third tournament of the year, the 37-year-old has defeated world No. 11 Alex De Minaur in the second round after winning three straight games. He will now play Lehecka on Tuesday in an attempt to eliminate another seed.
It seems that the opportunity to play the 22-time Major winner in his farewell home tournament appearance has overwhelmed all of Nadal’s opponents thus far. Even De Minaur acknowledged that pressure was weighing him down. However, Lehecka is going about things differently in an attempt to terminate the Spaniard’s run.
