Upperclassmen: “Bulldogs’ Roster Battles Heat Up as Talent Abounds in the New…
The quality of players on the Athens practice fields means that the Bulldogs have an abundance of starting slots available.
rivalry. It is the cornerstone of any successful team. Top players push other top players to raise their game or face being overlooked. To the same degree as any other college football team, Georgia participates in it.
As 2024 draws near, Georgia finds itself in a peculiar situation. In the days before the Transfer Portal, one might predict a team’s destiny by looking at how many of its starters would return, although this is becoming less and less common. The Bulldogs possess it. They only have three players out of the starting lineup who play both sides of the ball.
With all that talent back, it must be amazing, right? Head coach Kirby Smart presents a another perspective. Just because you started earlier does not mean that you will have a job this season.
“I ask you: does it make you superior to other persons because you’ve snapped snaps?” Smart posed the question earlier this week.
Georgia will surely always be the scene of rivalry. The Bulldogs have added another class that is ranked as the best overall recruit class, full of five-star prospects who won’t just stand by and let veterans take all the plays.
“Especially in this league, experiences are obviously valuable,” Smart continued. You can, however, reverse course. Furthermore, you need to be careful while engaging with older guys because if you don’t, the younger guy exceeds them and they regress.
There hasn’t been a single year since we arrived when a younger player didn’t perform better than an older one because the older player wasn’t as driven, hungry, or focused.
Two things can both be true at the same time. It’s possible that Smart means every word he says, even if he frequently uses the media to communicate with his upperclassmen.
After Georgia’s two-year starting linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson was injured during the previous season, rookie CJ Allen assumed the job and never relinquished it. Malaki Starks started his college career by defeating a number of highly sought-after recruits after enrolling on school as a freshman.
Because so many players are returning, we have a good sense of what Georgia’s two-deep will look like against Clemson in Week 1, but don’t be shocked if a few younger players surprise us.
