Detroit Lions in danger of losing TE Brock Wright to 49ers

The Detroit Lions may lose veteran tight end Brock Wright after he signed an offer sheet with the San Francisco 49ers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

This summer, the Lions extended a $2.985 million restricted free agent tender to Wright, good for one season. Wright was then given the choice to either accept the one-year contract or keep looking for a better offer elsewhere. It’s evident that he chose the latter course and investigated his potential market.

Nevertheless, it’s possible that Wright is returning to Detroit. The Lions now have the opportunity to match the 49ers’ contract offer by using the restricted free agent tender. The specifics of the offer are still unknown at this time.

UPDATE: According to Dave Birkett, the 49ers are offering a $12 million, three-year contract.

But he will remain with the Lions if Detroit decides to match it. In the event that the 49ers sign him, the Lions will not be compensated as they selected the “right of first refusal only” tender, which carries the lowest salary.

Wright has played for the Lions for the past three seasons, mostly as a blocker but also as the team’s backup tight end. In his 41 games played, 19 of which he started, he has hauled in 43 receptions for 424 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Lions will be a tad shorthanded at tight end if Wright is truly lost. At the tight end position, the Lions currently only have contracts with Shane Zylstra, James Mitchell, and Sam LaPorta.
