A little more than three years ago, Sheila Hamp gained ownership of the Detroit Lions from her mother. Many things have changed since then, including the expectations put on the organization she presently heads. The increase has been quite significant for Hamp and the team. It means a lot to those who support it too. But to win the last game of the season would be a whole other story.

FOX 2 at Michigan’s Allen ParkIt had been little over three years since Sheila Hamp took over as the Detroit Lions’ owner from her mother, Martha Firestone Ford. So what has changed since that day? a significant amount.

On June 23, 2020, the Lions announced that Martha Ford, who has owned the team since 2014, will hand over the keys to her daughter and resign her role. Martha Ford took over the family business from her husband, William Clay Ford, after 50 years.

She hadn’t gone into it believing blindly when Hamp took over. She has been a longstanding member of the team and the NFL, having held the position of vice chair from 2014 to 2019.

The 2020 NFL season got underway with Matt Patricia guiding the Lions as head coach and Bob Quinn acting as general manager, with Covid keeping people out of the stadium. By the end of Thanksgiving, they were both gone.

She said that the first step should be to define your noble purpose, and she called a close college buddy who could help. She recalled him telling her that if you have a few people to back you, everything will fall into place.

“My noble cause was the city of Detroit, the fans, the state, and anyone who has supported the Lions for so many years,” she said after giving it some thought.

They came to the conclusion that culture and leadership were the most crucial traits for the new administration to possess.

Brad Holmes, an executive for the Los Angeles Rams, was hired, as Hamp and Wood disclosed on January 14. A week later, Dan Campbell became their new head coach.

After finishing 3-13-1 in 2021, the Lions were able to use the second overall pick to draft Aidan Hutchinson. Despite finishing 9-8, they were not in the playoffs the year before. The team members are really looking forward to something very special this year.

About to start her third season as the main owner, Hamp feels the right people are in place because of the support she’s received.

“I think this technique has greatly improved me. I think so because I can see everything happening in front of me and because the right individuals are here. I’m happy I was able to choose the right people. I wasn’t sure because I had never held this type of leadership position before. I never really know with everything new you attempt, so I had no clue if it would work out or not. I’m quite thrilled because I have a lot of support. I could never do this by myself,” Hamp told Dan Miller of FOX 2.

With the correct facilities in place, the Lions were a serious contender for the postseason last season, but they ultimately played spoiler against Green Bay. Based on their performance in the previous season, Hamp believes the Lions have a lot of promise.

I promise, it’s very amazing. It’s rather exhilarating. Given that this is our first NFL season opener in Kansas City, it’s obvious the league has a different opinion of us. The sheer number of national games they plan for us is astounding. We didn’t have any last year. It’s very wonderful, and we think we’re up for the challenge,” said Hamp.

What would it mean for Hamp and the squad to win in February?

“Yes, I have thought about it a little. She added, “I would be lying if I claimed I hadn’t.”

“I’ve thought a lot about it, and I believe that raising the trophy would be fantastic for the city, the fans, and my entire family.”
