San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that, following Super Bowl LVIII, he sacked defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, despite having previously said that he expected every member of the staff to return in 2024.

On Sunday night, the Chicago Chiefs defeated the 49ers 25–22 to win their third Super Bowl in the previous five years.Patrick Mahomes, who passed for 333 yards and two touchdowns, was named the game’s MVP for the third time in his career.

Shanahan’s: After the loss, Super Bowl problems worsen. He has now lost two Super Bowls as a head coach, both against the Chiefs, and was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons’ best Super Bowl comeback against the New England Patriots.

Shanahan is already adjusting his team three days after the game in Las Vegas. He decided to let Wilks go since he had only been hired a year earlier to succeed DeMeco Ryan as head coach of the Houston Texans.

In a conference call, Shanahan declared, “This morning, I dismissed Steve Wilks from his duties.” In the end, we’ll rotate around the defensive coordinator. It was a tough decision since it really says nothing about Steve as a man or as a football coach. Really, he’s the exact type of man we’ve always desired. He is an excellent football coach.

“But after going through the full year and these past few days, with our team’s direction and present position from a strategy and other aspects, I felt pretty firmly that this was the best decision for the business,” the statement reads.

Shanahan had previously said that he expected all of the coaches to return, but removing Wilks suggests that he is ready to make some big changes. The 44-year-old wants to bring the iconic 49ers back to the Super Bowl with them the next season in order to stop their 30-year losing streak.
