The New York Giants’ general manager, Joe Schoen, announced that he would soon be retiring.
To suggest that the Giants are looking desperately for Daniel Jones’ replacement would be misleading.
They are not facing dire circumstances. They never thought they would be this close to the top options, but that is exactly where they are.
They finished 2024 ranked sixth overall as a result of their 2023 failures. The club at Pick Six should seriously consider it unless they are absolutely positive they have their franchise QB.
They will also. They are, in fact.
“Where we are at six, we’re going to look at everything,” general manager Joe Schoen said at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine. Every post will be taken into account. Although it’s a strong draft, you really hope you’re not back there since you don’t want to be choosing from the top 10. All things considered, this is a good draft, and after evaluating every position and perhaps obtaining a solid player, we should be able to choose the best player.
A squad looking to get an outstanding quarterback this season does not want to be out of the top five.
The Bears, Commanders, and Patriots might each choose a quarterback, or two, or three.
Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels could thus not be available following the three rounds.
The Cardinals (No. 4) and Chargers (No. 5) are not likely to choose quarterback, although the Giants (No. 6) and Titans (No. 7) may. The eighth-ranked Falcons are in need of a quarterback.
At the second quarterback tier of this draft, J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix Jr. are ranked in varying order depending on the taste a team is looking for. Selecting just one of them seems like a lot to ask at number six.
“It’s a tremendous quarterback draft,” said Schoen. It’s not just found at the top. A few guys in the mid-levels, in my opinion, will make fantastic No. 2s. There are athletes that could be drafted with the third overall choice.
As previously mentioned by Schoen, the Giants will add a quarterback to the mix in addition to Jones and second-year player Tommy DeVito.
Schoen gave Jones a $160 million, four-year deal last year. He has to be playing because he has a $35 million guarantee for this season. According to Schoen, if Jones is well, he should start the season.
After this season, Jones’ guaranteed pay expires, and the Giants have the option to end the deal in 2025 for a $22 million dead money fee.
As a result, Jones and the Giants are married for the time being, albeit maybe not for long.
Jones tore his ACL after taking the new deal, but despite this setback, Jones remains a player whom Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll believe in. He is now viewed as a medical risk by the Giants.
“I have trust in Daniel, who is our starting quarterback,” Schoen said.
It doesn’t seem like the Giants organization is really driven to get into the top three.
That appetite might be whetted if one of the prospects completely blows the Giants away throughout the interview process.
