Anthony Joshua claims he could defeat Tyson Fury and admits his outburst after Oleksandr Usyk’s defeat was due to “ego and pride.”
Anthony Joshua, a well-known boxer from Britain, has thought back on his outburst following his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in their heavyweight title rematch last year. Joshua said in an interview with Louis Theroux that he was motivated by his “ego and pride” when he knocked Usyk’s belts out of the ring, but he later acknowledged that boxing was no longer “fun” for him and that he was under pressure to succeed.
In August, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Joshua lost to Usyk by split decision, thereby failing to reclaim the unified heavyweight belts.
After the loss, the 34-year-old looked incensed and oddly picked up two of Usyk’s belts before letting them fall out of the ring. Then, at the press conference following the battle, he delivered an eloquent speech before crying.
I CAN’T WAIT ON USYK AND FURY’ FRAMPTON URGES JOSHUA TO FIGHT HRGOVIC
“That was an ego-and-pride thing coming out,” stated the man. “I resurrected the heavyweight division within me. Is it right or wrong?
Joshua was obviously annoyed by Theroux’s “probably wrong” interruption, so he answered, “You asked me a question, and I’m answering it.”
“So I threw [the belts] because that’s what I felt like,” he went on. Taking to the mic, I spoke to the audience. Would it have been better on my part? Naturally, I could have.I had won twelve rounds of fighting. I was irritated and frustrated. I was aware that I had lost the title race. The queries began. “What’s up with him? Where’s his head?” All of this: “Is he able to win the world championship three times?” Individuals fabricate this story and exert pressure on me. It’s excessive. The days of doing it for fun are long gone. If all you’re doing is this for the love of it, you’re a prospect.
After losing to Usyk, Joshua recovered, defeating Jermaine Franklin by unanimous decision in April and winning in August.
However, Joshua persisted in implying to Theroux that he was finding the pressure surrounding his work to be nearly unbearable.
“This is my life’s work; this is all I know,” he declared. “Am I interested in making it to the finals? I would adore doing that. Will I arrive there in an astute manner? Indeed.Do I know anything about boxing now that I don’t? Completely. Do I still want to get better as a boxer? Indeed. It never seems to be enough, no matter where I started or where I end up. All of this: “Is he able to win the world championship three times?” It’s excessive. If I’m unable to handle it, perhaps I should give up.”
Although Joshua has been associated with a bout, the British athlete reaffirmed his desire to face the soon-to-be WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
Joshua responded, “Yeah,” when asked if he believed he could defeat Fury. It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m game.”
