According to Jordan Schultz of The Bleacher Report, the Detroit Lions have signed free agency wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones to a $2 million, one-year contract. Lions general manager Brad Holmes prioritized the rumored transaction because he thinks the 25-year-old will develop into a valuable player in the league.
Peoples-Jones, a former standout at Michigan and Cass Tech High School, was acquired by the Lions before the NFL trade deadline the previous season.
He was born in Detroit. Peoples-Jones was obtained by the Lions from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2025.
Following the trade announcement at a press conference, Holmes stated, “We’re excited about (Peoples-Jones).” “He will work well here; he has a track record of good production. He has always had excellent morals. It goes without saying that he is from Detroit, Michigan.
Thus, I believe we will be incredibly pleased. The young man is excited to start this procedure, based on our recent conversation.
Every decision we make is always in the best interests of the team and the franchise, and that applies to all of our actions. That explains why.
“He offers versatility. He’s a large, intelligent man with good contested catch skills who can play both indoors and outdoors.
He’s been quite resilient. He simply embodies what we stand for. He’ll blend right in, in my opinion. We’re introducing him as another flavor to our blend, and he can do a lot for us.
Peoples-Jones finished with five receptions for 58 yards in eight games, including one start, during his last season with the Lions.
The 6-foot-2 wideout has a reputation as a reliable possession receiver with a talent for snagging contested 50-50 balls while playing in a limited role during that time.
Ben Johnson, the coordinator, clearly saw something in the fourth-year wide receiver, as Detroit decided to bring him back as an additional component of the offense.
6-2, 210 pounds, and able to run under 4.5 is what Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was referring to. “You don’t grow those men on trees.
And I believe that is just what we have seen from him thus far. He has strong hands, a large catch radius, and is and is a highly fluid route runner, and I believe he can work both inside and outside.
Peoples-Jones had a solid 2022 season in Cleveland prior to moving to Detroit, catching a career-high 61 catches for 839 yards and three touchdowns.
He only caught eight passes for 97 yards in seven games over the opening few games of the previous season, though, as his output declined. Cleveland decided to split ways with the fan favorite as a result.
Known by his nickname “DPJ,” he will re-join a group of wide receivers that includes Kalif Raymond, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Jameson Williams.
