The dominant team in the Championship has signed a big player for the upcoming season, but they intend to get him to the UK earlier.
According to Rugby League Live, Wakefield Trinity has signed a contract to sign forward Ky Rodwell from the Parramatta Eels. It’s thought that the 24-year-old, who has five NRL matches under his belt, decided to sign with the team for the 2025 campaign.
It is believed that there is potential for the agreement to move forward, bringing Rodwell on board for the current season. However, the athlete would still have to get out of his contract with the Eels, which hasn’t happened yet.
Wakefield is free to add Rodwell at this time because there is no restriction on the number of foreign players that may be included in teams that are lower than the Super League. At this point, nevertheless, it is believed that the eels have demonstrated resilience. He was included in their list of the top 30 players for the forthcoming NRL campaign.
With Rodwell’s high esteem in NRL circles, Wakefield has made another excellent addition. Because of his excellent defensive qualities and tremendous workrate, he has been compared to current Huddersfield Giants captain Luke Yates.
Despite just having five NRL games under his belt, Rodwell qualifies for the New South Wales Cup after a standout season. He participated in 19 competition games the previous season, averaging almost 34 tackles per contest with a 95.5 percent success rate. He was a New South Wales Origin player at the Under-20 level and has played for the Australian Schoolboys.
Wakefield, who are heavy favorites to win the title this year, has already begun to plan a significant hiring campaign for the next one. Oliver Russell, Mike McMeeken, and Tom Johnstone have all been added to their wishlists. Wakefield hasn’t spent any time negotiating contracts with overseas talent, even if deals involving local players cannot be completed until May 1.
