Contract Extension: Jordan Love’s ‘Target’ to be paid like an elite quarterback

The Green Bay Packers might offer Jordan Love a huge contract extension in approximately six weeks. Joel Corry, a former NFL agent, has a forecast.

Green Bay, Wisconsin. Jordan Love officially extended his one-year deal with the Green Bay Packers on May 3, 2023. Love will be able to sign a new extension for extra years and money on May 3, 2024.

Much greater money.

How much money will Love get by the end of 2023 after putting up a string of outstanding performances?

The goal for Love’s team of negotiators will be “greater than” the three-year average of Rodgers’ final contract extension with the Packers in 2022, according to veteran NFL agent Joel Corry of CBS Sports. $50,271,667 was that amount.

Otherwise, Love is going to get paid like a quarterback of the highest caliber.

Assume Love signs a $255 million five-year contract, which works out to a cool $51 million each season. Based on their overall worth, that would put Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen on trial.

The average of $51 million would be less than that of Burrow ($55.0 million) of the Bengals, Herbert ($52.5 million) of the Chargers, and Jackson ($52.0 million), the two-time MVP of the Ravens. It would match the amount signed by Eagles player Josh Hurts and surpass the sums signed by Russell Wilson of the Broncos ($49.0 million), Kyler Murray of the Cardinals ($46.1 million), Deshaun Watson of the Browns ($46.0 million), Mahomes, the three-time Super Bowl champion ($45.0 million), and Allen of the Bills ($43.0 million).

General manager Brian Gutekunst stated, “Jordan had a really terrific season toward the end, especially the second half, and we are really excited to build around him,” indicating that the Packers would undoubtedly surround Love with talent.

He continued, saying, “I think we will go down that road” on the impending extension. That will undoubtedly be crucial for our football squad to have some consistency there, in my opinion. Since Jordan and his representative are excellent people, we will begin working toward that within the next few months.

The Packers don’t think time is of importance because Love is under contract until 2024, aside from the apparent desire to move it along quickly to avoid disruption. Love would likely feel greater pressure to make sure they don’t miss out on a large payout in the event of an unexpected injury.

Love split the season’s first two games between Chicago and Atlanta, posting back-to-back performances of three touchdowns against zero interceptions. It was a tale of two seasons for love.

Love completed seven games with eight touchdown throws and ten interceptions, starting with Game 3 against New Orleans and ending with Game 9 against Pittsburgh. Only one of his games had a passer rating of 100 or higher; the other four had completion rates of less than 60 percent.

Love was MVP-caliber Aaron Rodgers fantastic over the following nine games, which included the Week 10 comeback against the Chargers and the Cowboys’ wild-card thrashing. He completed 21 touchdown passes and only had one interception. Love had eight games with a rating of 100 or above and zero with a completion percentage of less than 60 percent, in contrast to the prior stretch of games.

Love defeated two-time MVP Mahomes and 2023 MVP runner-up Dak Prescott of the Cowboys in the second part of the season and playoffs. He also nearly defeated 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who came in fourth in the MVP voting.

Love at twice the price would have been a great deal with that kind of success.

Love will cost roughly four times as much annually as his average salary of $13.5 million.

Depending on the amount of the signing bonus that the Packers choose to prorate together with the addition of end-of-contract void years, the effect on the salary cap will likely be significant but not instantaneous. Love is expected to earn roughly $12.76 million in cap space for the 2024 campaign. Independent cap expert Ken Ingalls believes Love’s Year 1 cap amount isn’t too high above that threshold.
